I was born in the fall of 1980, in a small town in the center of Hawaii. As long as I can remember, I always had the ability to draw but duplicating photographs didn’t make me an artist. It wasn’t until high school that I was inspired by a talented art teacher who encouraged me to dig deeper into myself, into art, into expression. After high school, I worked around a little but never considered art as a profession. It was my stepfather who came up with the idea that I should talk with someone in a tattoo shop. I am an artist who happens to do tattoos as well, I am a strong believer in using art to promote tattooing.90% of all my work is free hand, I don’t like stencils because I think drawing keeps you sharp and exercises your artistic mind, so I only use them when its an absolute must.

Josh Crowell

image Born in Wichita, Kansas in 1980.  My father was an artist even though he wasn’t around I still pursued art in school and through comic books.  When I was 16 years old I decided to spend time with my father in Kansas City, Mo.  He was taught by Bob Shaw to tattoo in Texas.  From then on I caught the bug.  I started tattooing a month later but I was a full time student so I had to put tattooing on the back-burner.  I was 19 when I moved to Hawaii with my father and started making henna tattoos on the street in Waikiki. Doing henna tattoos I have to do every design free-hand so it challenges me everyday.  6 years ago I decided to go back to tattooing full time and henna part-time.  My speciality is whatever the customer wants I don’t like to limit myself to one style.  I like to travel with my wife and family to conventions as often as I can and enjoy working at Black Cat.  Mahalo.
